Popover Dinner Roll Recipe

Popovers are dinner rolls that feature a crusty outside with a warm airy center that melts in your mouth.  These dinner rolls are delicious with comfort foods; hearty pot roast, stews, peppercorn crusted prime rib, and beef wellington.  The light texture of the flavorful popover will compliment the meal.

My mom made popovers every Sunday and I enjoyed them with butter, jam, honey and dusted with powder sugar.  This southern popover recipe is easy; why not plan to make popover dinner rolls for your family.

Gather products and foods needed for this recipe:
  • Nonstick popover pan
  • Oven mitt
  • Wire whisk
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cup and spoons
  • Small saucepan
  • Cookie sheet
  • non-stick baking spray
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 8 eggs
  • 3 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbs. unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Recipe Instructions for Popover Dinner Rolls

  • Set the rack in the center of the oven and preheat your oven at 375F.
  • Heat the popover pan by setting it on the middle rack.  Warm the pan for seven minutes.  While the pan is warming you would mix your batter for the popovers.
  • Put the milk in a pot and set the burner on low.  Heat the milk until it is warm to the touch.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave.
  • Crack open the eggs on the rim of the mixing bowl and put the egg into the bowl.  Whisk the eggs until yolk and whites are blended. Add the melted butter, milk and the salt.
  • Mix all the ingredients with the wire whisk.
  •  Add the flour and mix the flour with all ingredients for one minute with the wire whisk.
  • Grease your popover pan with non-stick baking spray.  I use Pam butter flavor cooking spray as it works well.
  • Divide the batter into the popover pan.  Fill each cup half way.
  • Set a cookie sheet on the center rack of the oven. Set the popover pan on top of the cookie sheet.
  • Bake 40 minutes or until the popovers are puffed and golden on top.  Serve the popovers as soon as they come out of the oven.

This recipe makes 12 popovers.

For a special treat serve the popovers dusted with powder sugar and with blackberry jam.
